Cadbury Wispa Hot Chocolate Review

This is a very welcome new hot chocolate from Cadbury based on their classic Wispa chocolate bar. Remember when Wispas were discontinued and public demand brought them back? And now look at them - all grown up and so popular they even have their own hot chocolate! I don't often drink instant hot chocolate but I'm such a fan of the Wispa bar that I had to give this a try.

Cadbury's have a fair few versions of instant hot chocolate already on the market, but what makes this Wispa Hot Chocolate different is that is bubbles up. Not in a fizzy way - that would certainly be very odd. What we're talking about here is a soft frothy covering of seriously big bubbles on top of the hot chocolate itself.

I followed the suggested preparation method of adding 200ml of hot water to four heaped teaspoons of the powdered drink. The hot chocolate frothed up instantly with the biggest frothiest bubbles I've ever seen on a hot chocolate, and without the need for any effort at all on my part. Not even a bit of whisking required, nada. At first the bubbly layer makes up almost half the drink but this eventually settles down to a thick frothy layer on top of the hot chocolate, as you can see in the photo below.

The flavour of the hot chocolate is essentially the same as the regular Cadbury's hot chocolate; it's super sweet and with a subtle cocoa flavour that builds nicely as you drink. The frothy bubbles add a lovely texture to the hot chocolate, and makes it feel a lot more luxurious and velvety than a standard instant hot chocolate. Usually I would add some cocoa powder or marshmallows to the top of my hot chocolate, but the bubbly effect on the top of this drink is gorgeous enough on it's own.

This Wispa Hot Chocolate (or Hot Frothy Instant Choccy as it says on the front) is a very warming and delicious hot chocolate and it's worth buying for the frothing affect alone! If you don't fancy buying a whole jar then there are also individual sachets available (pictured above) that are only 36p each.

  1. I tried my first one of these yesterday and loved it! You captured the essence of it very well, it's certainly more luxurious than your average hot choc. I wish I had got a jar though because the sachet was a bit too weak for me. I usually add a few extra teaspoons of powder than what they tell you to, it makes it so much nicer :)

    1. Thanks Kev! I know what you mean about adding extra spoonfuls! Although what I normally do instead is add less water than they say (essentially making a smaller drink), I suppose that would work with the sachets too. :-)

    2. Ah, I do that too! I usually use a smaller cup for sachets of hot choc, you get less but it's much tastier.

  2. Sadly I don't like hot chocolate (weird considering how much actual chocolate I eat) but the hubby is pretty excited after seeing your photos so I will have to pick him some of this up. It does look pretty cool with the bubbles on top!

    1. I can understand how you feel about hot choc - they can be a bit "milky". I had to try this one though, just because I LOVE Wispas! I think your hubby will like this hot choc, let me know how it goes! :-)

  3. That looks delicious. I love a hot chocolate and ovaltine drinks. I also love Wispa! What a brilliant idea!
I hope Cadbury's release other flavours like Crunchie hot chocolate.I will get this on the weekend.
Your pictures make it look really frothy. Is it really like that or did you have to give it a good stir?
I love your clear mugs too.

    1. No stirring involved, the hot water just instantly reacts to froth it up. In fact the bubbles disappear if you stir it too much but luckily the hot choc mixture dissolves very quickly. If you love hot chocolate you will love this!

  4. I'm really not a hot drink fan tbh, but I am likely to give this a go, seeing as it's a choc version of one of my favourite bars. Plus, it come with a healthy score from you, which is a good enough recommendation for me!

    1. Thanks Marcus! It is quite a high score isn't it lol. Let me know what you think if you do try it.

I drink a LOT of hot drinks - all apart from hot chocolate. I bought it because of the "Wispa" name (it's also one of my favourite bars). Everyone here has loved the hot choc so far. Kids obviously loved it but even hubby gave it the thumbs up!

  5. Must must try this after that review!! Tried loads of hot chocs in my time hoping.... praying, they would be akin to their brand - Galaxy especially!! Disappointed :( And being a Maltesers fan i was totally disappointed by their hot choc version :( (despite the cute ball packaging!) Will def be trying this, thanks!!

    1. oooh great info Jo! I've never tried Galaxy or Maltesers hot chocolate, so that's very interesting to know. This Wispa Hot Choc is not as chocolatey as the actual Wispa bar. Like Kev says above it probably needs a few extra teaspoons to increase the chocolate intensity. It was the bubbles that won me over :-)

    2. I totally agree that Galaxy's hot chocolate is not up to par, but Wispa and Waitrose Essential's own brand have won me over: http://london-glutton.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/cadbury-wispa-hot-chocolate-drink.html

  6. Hey Katherine :-),

I tried this the other day actually, hot chocolate is my complete undoing, totally cannot live without it! My personal fav HAS to be ''wicked white'' from the options range, have you tried it yet? So delicious! Anyway, I hate anything frothy...especially my hot chocs but I surprisingly LOVED this. It was soo yummy and sweet, so I totally agree with your post :) I wont what it would be like if you bit of each end of a wispa bar, and used it as a straw in this drink? hmmmmm :P Fantastic review, however :)
    Becca x!

    1. Hi Becca! I like the way you think - making a Wispa straw would be epic!

I haven't been into hot chocolate too much but I think I've been converted after this. I can't go a day without having a cup! I'll definitely give the Options one you mention a go - thanks for the recommendation! :-)

    2. Hey Katherine! :)),

Wispa straw sounds scrummy doesn't it? :P
As for the white hot choc, ah it's my favourite, soooo delicious! Tesco's have the big jars on offer at the moment for £1.59!

Sachets though, I'd recommend buying two and make them together, if you decide to make it with water, sometimes it can be watered out, however made with milk it's so creamy and wonderful! Will most defiantly look forward to a review, if you try it ! :))

  12. After purchasing what I hoped to be the most incredible hot chocolate in the world to enjoy at home on a cold night, wispa went and shat in my kettle. What a bitter disappointment when I took a sip and tasted what I can only describe as hot water, sweetener and total soul crushing disappointment. I'm surprised my partner didn't leave me after dishing that chocolate lacking monstrosity to him. Wispa I'm not angry I'm just really disappointed in you. Should've spent my money on galaxy instead. You have forever scorned a hole of emptiness and sadness into my soul that no hot chocolate can ever heal.. I hope you're proud of yourself.
