Degustabox May: Surprise Foodie Box & Discount Code!

The May Degustabox, a monthly parcel of surprise foodie products, was delivered last week. I love that it was sent out earlier than usual so that it would arrive in time for the Bank Holiday! The Degustabox has an eclectic theme this month, with a variety of barbecue and summer inspired products.

Discount Code: OWC2W

Each Degustabox costs £12.99 a month, which includes delivery. There is no fixed contract involved and you can cancel at any time. Degustabox have kindly provided my readers with the following Discount Code for £3.00 off your next Degustabox, bringing the cost to £9.99 delivered. Simply enter the code - OWC2W.

Here's a closer round up of all the products inside the May Degustabox:

Daelmans Stroopwafels: Being a bit of a coffee addict, Stroopwafels have long been one of my favourite treats. Daelmans is an authentic Dutch family bakery that have been making Dutch Stroopwafels since 1909. Each cookie has a lovely thick caramel filling which goes slightly warm and gooey when rested on a hot cup. The hint of cinnamon in the waffle and sweet caramel flavour of the filling is perfect with a cup of coffee!

Sweet Baby Ray's: I love it when Degustabox include items straight from the USA in their foodie selection. Apparently Sweet Baby Ray's is the no.1 BBQ sauce in the States so I really can't wait to give this Honey Barbecue Sauce version a try. It's a sweet and smokey blend that can be used for marinating, dipping or as a cooking ingredient. Time to dust off the barbecue!

Schwartz Grill Mates Marinade: This is an interesting new recipe mix as the packet itself is designed to unfold and creates a large bag. The instructions are to simply pop up to 900g of meat into the bag and leave it to marinade overnight. The meat is then ready to be used on the BBQ, or cooked in an oven or grill. There are 6 flavours in the range; Honey & Soy, Spicy BBQ, Red Wine & Garlic, Brazilian BBQ, Teriyaki and Korean BBQ.

Fuel 10K Protibrick: I've reviewed quite a few products from Fuel 10K range but have never tried their Protibrick cereal. It's the first ever protein boosted wheat biscuit cereal, that is high in fibre, low in sugar and fat, and is made with 100% wholegrain. Mr. Grocery Gems was chuffed to find this included in the Degustabox as he has recently taken up running and is always looking for high protein products. I'll have a full review soon.

9 Bar Fruity: Even though I've heard of 9 Bar energy bars, I've never actually tried any of their products. They're described as healthy snacks that are packed with nutritious seeds, dried fruits and topped with carob. 9 Bar gets it's name from their star ingredient, the hemp seed, which contains all 9 essential amino acids.

The 9 Bar Fruity is packed full of seeds which gives it a nice crunchy texture. The seeds also dominate the flavour with the added dried fruit adding plenty of extra sweetness. It's a unique flavour and is very different from standard energy bars.

Maggi So Stir Fry: There were two varieties in the Degustabox: Singapore Curry Chicken Noodles and Oriental 3 Spice Chicken Noodles. At first I thought they were just larger versions of flavoured instant noodles. However, these large packs are actually a whole meal in one. The packet contains enough seasoning and noodles to create a family stir fry dish once fresh ingredients are added.

I made a super quick mid-week dinner using the Maggi So Stir Fry Singapore Curry Noodles pack by first stir frying some chicken breast and vegetables, then adding water, the dried noodles and the seasoning mix. It all cooks together in one pan until all the water has evaporated and resulted in a really tasty stir fry dish. The curry flavouring was tasty without being too spicy or overpowering but still with plenty of flavour. I've mentioned before that my kids are big fans of noodles and I'll definitely be stocking up on a few more of these Maggi So Stir Fry packs.

Slim Pasta Lasagne: Slim Pasta is a diet product made from Konjac flour and Juroat oat fibre (... no idea!) to create a "lasagne" with only 21 calories per 100g. This isn't really a product I would normally go for as I don't buy specialist diet food. Has anyone tried this one?

Dr. Antonio Martins Kid's Coco Juice: This carton of organic coconut juice flavoured with banana is made entirely using the youngest coconuts. Coconut juice has a rather unique earthy flavour and it's not one that I usually enjoy. However, I was surprised to find that the Kid's Coco is really delicious! It's a wonderfully refreshing drink with a lovely sweet banana flavour. Apparently these are stocked in Sainsbury's and I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for this delicious juice.

Sarsons Balsamic Vinegar: Sarson's has been producing vinegar for over 200 years and I'm sure everyone reading this is familiar with their classic Malt Vinegar. Now they have launched a new range of authentic balsamic vinegar too. It has the same distinctive and tangy flavour of the traditional balsamic vinegar which is perfect with salads.

Overall I was really impressed with the selection in the May Degustabox, especially because it was quite a different range of products compared to previous boxes. It seems like a much healthier selection which is certainly good for summer. My favourites this month are the recipe mixes from Maggi and Schwartz, aswell as the Daelmans Stroopwafels and the 9 Bar Fruity bars. If you're a subscriber then I'd love to hear your thoughts on this months Degustabox selection in the comments below.

  1. I've had the Slim rice and noodles. they are tasteless and flavourless(but when you open the packet have a bad fish smell) the trick is to wash them in water before cooking. They take on the flavours of the other ingredients i.e. sauces and herbs. a little bit is quite filling(contains a lot of water, there are a similar brand of noodles called 'zero noodles' which are made from a Japanese water plant that contain no calories)

    1. Hi Anon, thanks for all the info. I must admit I found the instructions on the back quite strange especially regarding washing the lasagne in water. It makes more sense that it can then be used as a base for other flavourings. I feel more confident about giving it a try - thanks :)

    1. That's fab and really great to know that it gets your seal of approval. We still haven't tried it yet (just too many other cereals opened at the moment!) but I'm really looking forward to it now :)
