I found this intriguing chocolate in a local shop, alongside some other Milka bars I have never seen before. And when I write "intriguing" I obviously mean downright strange. I experienced some doubt when faced with the choice of buying it. I haven't had much luck with some of the Polish or Bulgarian Milka bars so on part of me was telling me not to get it, but the other part of me looked at the packaging and thought "Sold!". It just looks so cheery and "happy".
Your eyes do not deceive you, this really is a Milka bar called Happy Elderberry Cream. It's also a Limited Edition, which in this case, is probably for the best. A internet quick search informed me that this bar was originally released in Poland.
From looking at the packaging this bar consists of white chocolate filled with separately defined layers of white cream and an elderberry.
As soon as I opened the packaging I thought it looked quite strange. I couldn't capture it too well in my photo but the dark filling is clearly visible underneath each segment of white chocolate. I think this is the first time I have seen a bar like this.
The filling is clearly visible from the underneath too. I have to admit the question "why did you buy this?" was ringing even louder in my ears at this point. And there is another question too. What on earth does Elderberry even taste like? I mean sure, I've had those apple & elderberry juice drinks before, I'm even lucky enough to have a lovely elderberry tree in my own garden (I've raked up these little berries enough times), but I still don't know what they taste like.
Annoyingly the filling proved quite hard to photograph. I couldn't take my usual cross section type photo, it just wasn't playing ball with that one. I can tell you right now that there was no white layer inside, as per the picture on the front. There is only a hard white chocolate outer shell that is filled with jam. Yes really jam.
Definitely no white layer anywhere, just white chocolate and a jam like substance. It's impossible to break this chocolate along it's designated lines, the jammy layer makes it quite soft once it's snapped. The elderberry filling is a dark red colour, it's not completely smooth, there are definitely some bits of the berry inside (although it's not lumpy either). Just like a jam really! The elderberry flavour is quite unique, it reminded me of blueberry, but whereas blueberry can be very sweet, this has an added tartness to it.

That sounds weird! I'd probably buy it, just because it's so odd. But it doesn't sound appetising.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a weird one! I'm the only one who likes it in my household :-)
DeleteThat chocolate sounds erm interesting. Great review as ever but I don't think I will be rushing to the shops for this one.
ReplyDeleteLol I think the "erm interesting" sums it up very well!
DeleteI loved the jam (the wrapper calls it jelly, but yes, it is more like a jam) and thought there was too little of it. The chocolate was too sweet for me. Same goes for the plum and strawberry bars (yup, there's a strawberry one too, it's called sweet, with two strawberries making up the 'w'). I like the concept, I like the jam, but I wish the overall combination wasn't so sweet.
ReplyDeleteooh I like the sound of a Strawberry one! I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm glad to know that someone else liked the jam filling too, I don't feel quite so alone now! I know what you mean about the chocolate, it's certainly too sweet overall.
DeleteI'm suprised that they released that in Poland, becouse I'm sure that most Polish people under 30 have not idea what elderberry is! In Poland I've tried some home made grandma's elderberry juice and now in England i give this fruit chance and I like it! Anyway, i will try this chocolate i need to find it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining that because I wasn't sure if maybe elderberry was a popular flavour in Poland. I love all the unusual Milka flavours that we're getting from Poland, they are much more interesting then the UK releases.
DeleteI hope you find it, good luck!
To be honest I even didn't know that Milka have some limited editions! But we don't have in Poland D'aim one and I always send them to my mum :)
Deletemmm the Daim one is lovely! I think these Limited Editions were released last year in Poland so maybe they have stopped selling them already? They are extremely hard to find!
DeleteI've been on the search for this one for a while, it sounds so odd but I love odd chocolates haha! Like you I'm getting a bit jaded with some of the imported Milka bars, Katherine..they often turn out to be rubbish. But this sounds like it actually has some weird charm to it.
ReplyDeleteI recently tried one of the Polish cherry cream Milkas, and it was actually not too bad.
I think this bar has finally reaffirmed my faith in imported Milka bars! I've actually got the Cherry Cream Milka to try so I'm glad to hear it's not too bad. Is it more of a jam like this bar?
DeleteYeah it's jam...and a lot of it. I was surprised that it actually looks like it does on the wrapper!
Deleteoooh sounds like my kind of chocolate then! You can never really trust the wrapper picture lol
DeleteThank you :-)
Neat find! I've only had the more plain Milka flavours (ones I've picked up while away) but I would love to come across some of these more interesting combinations. I would probably pass on the white-chocolate but I like milk chocolate paired with fruit flavours.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably the best chocolate I've ever eaten, it's a 10/10 for me, I'd pay 10x the price for it if it were still available. :(
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree, best mass produce "chocolate" I ever had
