Something a little different today! I was recently sent the latest album by 'Funkmaster general' Reole. The album What's Cookin'? is influenced by cooking food and even comes with a little leaflet packed full of recipes. It's suggested that you turn up the music to full volume whilst cooking up a storm!

Reole started his musical life playing brass in Mardi Gras parades and his What's Cookin'? album features a blend of instrumental funk, jazz and classical rock.

Nib Nibs Review & Competition!

Nib Nibs are an award winning range of premium snacks made in North Yorkshire that contain all natural flavours and hand picked ingredients from British suppliers. I was lucky enough to be sent some products from the Nib Nibs range to review, including their finest Cheddar Cheese Straws and Mini Cheese Straws tubs, and I'm delighted that they are also offering one of my readers the chance to win a selection of Nib Nibs - see the end of this post for how to enter! 

The tubs of Mini Cheese Straws comes in three flavours; Exceptional Cheddar Cheese, Exceptional Cheddar & Spicy Chilli, and Exceptional Cheddar & Cheeky Onion Straws. I had to start with the latter flavour as cheese and onion is one of my favourite savoury snack combinations. Each tub has a pull-back foil lid for freshness, and the the outer lid means these are easily resealable which is a bonus. I was also pleased to see that inside, the tub was filled to the top with snacks - no half empty pots here! The flavours here are all full on and utterly delicious, I don't think they could have added any more cheese and butter into each bite! The ingredients are all fantastic and the result is a surprisingly tasty snack. 

The Exceptional Cheddar & Spicy Chilli mini cheese straws also have the same base ingredients of wheat flour from Yorkshire Mills, mature British cheddar, and British butter. The addition of chilli powder and paprika powder gives these a real kick of heat towards the end of each bite. They really do deliver on the promise of a spicy chilli flavour and would make a great snack for any chilli lover out there! The larger Cheddar Cheese Straws and the tubs of Mini Cheddar Cheese Straws are also perfect snacks and manage to recreate the delicious flavour of a freshly baked cheese straw in a handy snack. I was really impressed by the overall quality of all the products here and I can easily see why they have won awards for their great taste.

Giveaway! Chocolate By Genevie Competition

I was contacted by Chocolate by Genevie, an online chocolate company that specialises in luxury chocolates by post, offering my readers a chance to win a Gold Box with 16 Belgian Chocolates. To enter please check out the details at the end of this post!

They also kindly sent me the Brown Box 12 Chocolates to try. The chocolates themselves are all made in Belgium and feature quite a classic spectrum of flavours. Each box can be altered to suit your own tastes, so more or less of a particular flavour can be included. My box contained the following chocolates; champagne truffle, nougat, dark orange, praline crisp, arabica truffle, cointreau, milk truffle, coconut & pineapple, coffee praline, cherry, dark truffle and white truffle.

Of course I made a beeline straight for the pineapple & coconut centred chocolate which has a very cute spikey appearance.

I enjoyed the flavour here, it reminded me of a pineapple chocolate I bought in Portugal. The coconut flavour was somewhat secondary to the dominant pineapple but it worked well to create a creamy tropical chocolate.

Another favourite from the box included the praline crisp. This is a very large chocolate, with a timeless shape and design.

The milk chocolate is standard Belgian with a creamy, slightly nutty flavour. The crispy rice pieces add a nice crunch. Overall this is an attractive selection of generously sized chocolates. There were perhaps too many dark chocolates in the box for me, which I wasn't keen on, and I would have preferred more white chocolate (yes, my sweet tooth strikes again), but as mentioned such a change could be requested.

FUEL 10K Review & WIN TWO WEEKS Supply of FUEL Breakfast Products!

I was recently contacted by FUEL in order to review their range and also offering my readers the chance to WIN two weeks supply of Fuel products! See below for full details of the prize. The FUEL cereal range currently consists of an Energy Granola which boasts an added Guarana and Vitamin B mix, in either Chocolate Loaded or Nut Loaded varieties.  There is also an innovative Liquid FUEL Breakfast milkshake in Strawberry, Caramel Latte or Chocolate flavours, each with 20g of protein and less than 1% fat. Lastly, there are the quick and easy Porridge Pots which come in three delicious flavours; Golden Syrup, Apple & Cinnamon and Forest Fruits.

The FUEL packaging is certainly different. It's masculine black box and slightly angry looking eye immediately command your attention! The large silver letters proclaiming FUEL YOUR 10K HOURS introduce the basic idea behind this whole range. Inspired by the Malcolm Gladwell book Outliers, the 10k hours theory explains that perfection is achieved after 10,000 hours of practise. As FUEL themselves say "our products are designed to provide the morning sustenance to anyone on the 10k hours journey - whether they're an athlete, artist, businessman, musician - anyone who is in the pursuit of excellence!"

FUEL NUT LOADED GRANOLA. I'm sure most people can relate to that philosophy in one way or another, and it's a great idea for a breakfast range, but the real test is whether the products taste good! I tried out the FUEL Nut Loaded Granola which is a wholesome mix of oats, seeds and roasted nuts, such hazelnuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts and coconut. The granola is extremely tasty with generously large chunks and a delicious caramel flavour providing a background sweetness. The combination of guarana and added b vitamins is supposed to provide a natural energy boost, which is certainly something I need in the morning! I also found this granola great to enjoy by putting it into little pots to nibble on during the day as a filling snack.

LIQUID FUEL  - STRAWBERRY. A quick solution to a breakfast on the go are these Breakfast Milk Drinks. My hubby is one of those people who very rarely makes time for breakfast, so I gave him a Liquid FUEL drink sp that he could try it at work. It's a delicious drink, that tastes very similar to a strawberry milkshake, but with the added satisfaction of knowing that it's packed with protein and low in fat.

FUEL INSTANT PORRIDGE POT - GOLDEN SYRUP. I'm a huge fan of porridge, it's one of my favourite breakfasts, but I have to admit that I've never tried an instant porridge pot of this type before. I probably had quite low expectations about the flavour, but I'm happy to admit I was completely wrong. I left the porridge for longer than the time given on the pot (2 mins), as it hadn't quite thickened up enough in that time, but once it had, I loved the flavour and the sweetness from the golden syrup. The whole thing was very filling and satisfying, and I'll definitely be trying these again!

POM Wonderful Cocktails & Competition!

I was excited to be asked to try out the range of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice, and to give one of their delicious summer cocktails recipes a try. Be sure to keep reading until the end of this post for details of a competition for one of my readers to win THREE bottles of POM Wonderful!

Pomegranates are well known as a superfood because of their high antioxidant and vitamin content and POM Wonderful have used this to create a nutritious juice that's full of flavour. On it's own it reminded me a bit of cranberry juice with it's slightly tart edge but sweet finish. The strong fresh flavour means this juice also works wonderfully well when mixed with other drinks - it's especially delicious when mixed with lemonade.

APPLE & GINGER POM (Non- Alcoholic)

Ingredients

50ml POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice

50ml ginger ale

Quarter fresh apple

1 nail of ginger

2 lime wedges

Garnish: Apple Fan

Preparation

• Shake the ginger, apple and lime in a shaker
• Add POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice and shake with ice
• Strain into an ice-filled glass and top with ginger ale
• Garnish with an apple fan
• For an alcoholic version this recipe works great with Whiskey.

I was so pleased with my finished Apple & Ginger POM (above photo) - it turned out really well! I used extra lime wedges for the garnish rather than apple but the rest is the same as the recipe. The ginger gives this mocktail an extra zingy and refreshing quality, and makes it the perfect drink for a hot day. It's so simple to make and the resulting drink looks fantastic too!

The cards arrived very well packed in cardboard boxes with extra cardboard padding. Each card then comes in it's own thick envelope with useful spaces for names (photo above).

Inside the envelope the chocolate sits within a greetings card. The designs are bright and colourful, although slightly dated, and there area variety on the site to choose from.

Once the card is opened up prepare for lots and lots of smiles! Seriously, don't they look fab?! I must be a big kid at heart because I was so excited opening these up. I really do think that anyone would love to receive a personalised card like this, whether it be for a birthday or any other occasion!

My brother used the Universal Rectangle design for the Grocery Gems logo on the left, which looks fabulous. I can imagine this would be great for putting a favourite photo on chocolate! Then he also created a funny Wanted Poster with a "Dangerous if Hungry" tagline - yep that sums me up! It was very easy to do using the Wanted Poster template and instead of using a photo of me, he used this cartoon image from my About Me page. The end designs both looked amazing on the finished chocolate - the printing is so clear and vibrant, and it's of an impressively high quality.

I have to admit it pained me to actually break the chocolate card so I could taste the chocolate - the cards literally look too good to eat! However, for the sake of the review I had to do it, and once I tasted the chocolate I was pleasantly surprised. The Belgian chocolate is decent enough, made with 30% cocoa solids, that is very sweet and creamy, with a rich cocoa flavour. Overall, these cards were fantastic and I highly recommend them for any special occasion!

Border Biscuits Launches Big Baking Bonanza!

It probably won't surprise any of you that I'm a big fan of BBC show The Great British Bake Off. I was excited to hear that one of my favourite biscuit brands, Border Biscuits, has teamed up with Tesco and GBBO finalist James Morton to launch a nationwide search for the best biscuit recipe in Britain.

The Big Baking Bonanza is open to any amateur baker and the winner will receive £2000 and a place on a fantastic baking course - BUT the best bit is that the winning recipe will be turned into a limited edition new product by Border Biscuits, which will go sale in Tesco!

I really enjoyed watching James Morton, known for his favourite Fair Isle tank tops, on the Great British Bake Off - he had a great flair for inspired flavour combinations. About the Big Baking Bonanza James said: "If you're a lover of home baking and like to experiment with delicious ingredients, textures and tastes, then this could be your chance to show off your skills. We're searching for the best innovative, creative and delicious biscuit recipe to join the Border Biscuits family."

I'm sure many of you have some lovely family biscuit recipes to share. Personally, I would enter my recipe for vegan oat cookies - they're super simple to make, absolutely delicious (well I think so!) and can be modified to be nutty, chocolately, fruity - whatever you fancy :)
