Review: Mr Kipling Tiger Slices

A quick review of the new Tiger Slices from Mr. Kipling. I was quite surprised by these as Mr. Kipling have recently released plenty of new holiday-themed products, such as the Mr. Kipling Witches Hat Fancies and the Mr. Kipling Elf Slices. I'm not sure if the new Tiger Slices are a limited edition release, or if they are a permanent addition to the Mr. Kipling range, but I'll update here once I find out.

The Mr. Kipling Tiger Slices are described as orange flavoured and chocolate flavoured sponges, topped with a decorated orange coloured icing. Don't they look amazing? I love the striped sponge cake and the wavy tops, the whole thing looks very impressive.

The flavour is good too, although it's a much lighter chocolate and orange flavour than I was expecting. Mr Grocery Gems even called them 'slightly bland' but as I'm not really a fan of chocolate-orange, I was fine with the lighter flavour here. The orange flavour is certainly not as strong as the recent orange flavoured Mr. Kipling Witches fancies and thankfully they're far less sweet too. The texture seemed a little drier than the usual cake slices from Mr. Kipling which I often find quite greasy, but the cake itself is still nice and soft.

Overall, even though the orange and chocolate flavours are not particularly strong, we still all enjoyed these new Tiger Slices from Mr. Kipling. Let me know if you've tried them!

Review: Tango Jaffa Cakes

There are so many branded Tango grocery products about at the moment, from shower gels to freezable ice pops. I'm aware that Tango is a very popular drink amongst some of the youngsters that I know, especially the teenagers, so are these products designed to appeal to the younger market? Whatever the reason for the sudden Tango popularity, even I couldn't resist picking up the new Tango Jaffa Cakes when I spotted them a few days ago.

Inside the box, the Tango Jaffa Cakes are safely presented in a little plastic tray. There are 24 Jaffa Cakes in each box.

The box promises a tangy Tango orange filling, emphasised with a tagline "will the Tangy Orange get ya?", so I was expecting the filling in these to be a bit different from ordinary Jaffa Cakes. However, that was the wrong assumption to make. These are very plain orange flavoured Jaffa Cakes, and not even very good ones at that. The filling is a sweet and fairly bland orange, whilst the chocolate coating is very thin. But my main gripe here is the sponge part of the cake, it's too dry and crumbly and just ends up tasting quite stale. There are plenty of cheaper store branded Jaffa Cakes around that are excellent (I love the Aldi ones especially), and these Tango Jaffa Cakes are nowhere near as good.

And now a little rant about Jaffa Cakes... Jaffa Cakes are one of my favourite biscuits/cakes and I'd really like to see some more interesting flavours available, like peach or mango. I remember when there were Strawberry Jaffa Cakes and Blackcurrant Jaffa Cakes but now we're lucky to get the occasionally Halloween themed Lemon/Lime variety. The M&S Passionfruit & Peach Jaffa Cakes I tried earlier in the year were disappointing flavourwise and not that different from orange Jaffa Cakes. I've also tried some different brands purchased from Polish shops, including the Milka ChocoJaffa which were raspberry flavoured. I didn't even bother reviewing those because they tasted horrendous - stale and horrible. I suspect I got a dud packet that hadn't been stored properly. (I know there is a Polish brand called Delicje that has very good reviews and I've been keeping my eye out for their Cherry Jaffa Cakes). If McVities can make Tropical and Berry flavoured Jaffa Cake Mini Rolls then surely they can put those flavours into actual Jaffa Cakes? Here's hoping!

Grocery Gems Verdict: Tango Jaffa Cakes:

Rating: 4 out of 10.

Beech's Chocolate Creams Range - Orange, Rose, Mint & Violet

A few months ago I reviewed the wonderful new range of fine chocolate bars from Beech's (see review here). This month I have a selection of their best selling, and more traditional, chocolate creams to review. Beech's have been making traditional chocolates since 1920 and all their products are made using natural flavourings and colours. This fondant filled dark chocolate range is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. They're all packaged in really pretty pastel coloured boxes.

10% Discount Code:

Beech's have kindly offered my readers a 10% off all purchases for the next three weeks. Simply enter this promotional code at checkout - BFC11041410

Delivery is free on purchases over £12.00.

There are eight different flavoured creams in the range; Coffee, Lime, Raspberry, Strawberry, Violet, Orange, Mint and Rose. I was sent boxes of the last four to review. Each box has 10 disc shaped dark chocolates and costs £2.99.

Violet Creams - The violet creams had the firmest centre of all the four varieties I tried. The centre is slightly crumbly and a little drier than the others. The natural violet comes through as a sweetly floral flavouring. These will appeal to anyone who liked violet flavoured sweets as a child! It's not really my type of chocolate, but my Mum absolutely adored the delicate flavours here.

Orange Creams - The sweet fondant filling is ideally paired with a fresh orange flavour. I really enjoyed the orange and dark chocolate combination here. They're very sweet but the zesty orange makes them very moreish.

Mint Creams - These are a real classic combination of dark chocolate with a mint fondant. The texture of the centre was slightly softer compared to the others. The mint flavour is lovely and strong with a really refreshing edge.

Rose Creams - Surprisingly enough these were my favourites of all the chocolates. As a fan of Turkish delight chocolates, I loved the familiar flavours in this sweet fondant format. The sweetness of the fondant cream really suits the rose flavour and created a creamier version of a Turkish delight.

This whole range of chocolate creams is undoubtedly high quality and full of fresh natural flavours. Each chocolate is so easy to eat and completely delicious too. They would make a great gift for fans of more traditional chocolates - the only difficulty is which flavour to choose!

Products sent for an honest review.

Grocery Gems Verdict: Beech's Fine Chocolate Creams Range

Rating: 9 out of 10 - an excellent quality range.

Kit Kat Chunky Orange Limited Edition

Yesterday I posted a round up of lots of exciting new products being released for summer 2014. It's a shame I couldn't get as excited about the latest Limited Edition in the Nestlé Kit Kat range - the Orange Chunky. It's not that I'm unhappy to see the return of the Orange Chunky (it was around as recently as 2012 in the Choose a Chunky Champion promotion), far from it, and I'm sure chocolate orange fans will be glad too. It's just that it seems such an average flavour - surely this should just be part of their standard Chunky line up rather than a regularly trotted out "limited" variety? A tropical inspired Pineapple & Coconut or Peach & Passion Fruit would have been a much better limited edition choice for 2014! If it's going to be limited then surely that gives scope for being a bit braver and testing the waters?

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now. Funnily enough, I don't think I ever tried the Kit Kat Chunky Orange previously so I decided to give one a try this time (although I have already tried the Orange Kit Kat two finger bars that are always available!).

And it has to be said that the Kit Kat Chunky Orange is a very tasty chocolate bar. The outer chocolate has a lovely orange flavour that is quite zesty and fruity, and thankfully not too sweet. This orange flavour is well matched by the creamy milk chocolate and tempered by the plain inner wafers. Even though I'm not usually a fan of chocolate orange as a combination, I really did enjoy all the flavours here. It should definitely be part of the permanent range of Kit Kat Chunky rather than a limited edition!

Review: Cadbury Mousse Orange Chocolate

Cadbury seem to be rolling out an endless supply of new products recently, it's quite hard to keep up. I think for the sake of my waistline I will need to refrain from buying every new Cadbury product I see, there are just too many! To be honest there are so many new items that I can't even be 100% sure that this is new so if it isn't, apologies as always, and leave a comment below. Last week there were Cadbury Creme Egg Biscuits and the new Dairy Milk Ritz and Lu bars to try, and so far this week (it's only Monday!) I've already picked up these Orange Chocolate Mousse pots. Does anyone else agree that Orange Chocolate just sounds wrong? I keep wanting to change it to Chocolate Orange!

According to the Asda website this Cadbury Mousse variety is a limited edition. Just like the Cadbury Mint Chocolate Mousse which I reviewed last year, these come in a multipack of 4 pots each containing 90 calories. The mousse itself has a lovely light and fluffy texture that quickly melts in the mouth. The light chocolate flavour of the mousse is completely dominated by the strong orange which was very sickly sweet. But then again I'm not the greatest fan of chocolate orange pairings because they often end up far too sweet tasting for me. If however, you enjoy chocolate and orange as a combination then this would make a nice, and fairly light, treat to satisfy a chocolate craving, but overall I preferred the Mint Chocolate version.

Another new Cadbury product (I know I should say Mondelez instead of Cadbury but that doesn't sound right to me either...) which was released last week is the Wispa Gold Hot Chocolate Sachets - see Kev's Snack Review HERE!

Blood Orange & Mango Chocolate! Wedel Exotic Duet (Polish)

A massive thank you to the wonderful @Banjo_Chocolate who sent me some truly fabulous chocolates a few weeks back. I've so enjoyed trying everything she sent me, including these Oreo Peanut Butter wafers!. This chocolate bar from Polish chocolate makers, E. Wedel, immediately stood out to me in the package because of the interesting combination of flavours promised - blood orange & mango! It's hard enough to find a decent mango chocolate let alone such an intriguing prospect as this Exotic Duet bar.

What's even better is that this bar was absolutely delicious - seriously you all need to visit a local Polish grocery store to track this one down. The filling is a fruity cream layer topped with a jam/jelly layer. Most of the flavour came from the jam layer, which has a distinctive blood orange taste but with a tropical twist. The orange is definitely the stronger flavour over the mango but the two still work together to create a very unique experience. I love the fact that these are not overly sweet, unlike a lot of fruit centred chocolates these days (Quality Street ones especially!). In fact I didn't get any kind of throat burning sugary overload from this, even though I ate quite a few pieces in one go! The fruit flavours have enough tanginess to keep them from being too sweet, and the milk chocolate is not overly sugary either - I'm sure this is how all soft centred fruit chocolates used to taste!

Thank you once again to my fellow snack friend, the lovely @Banjo_Chocolate, for sending me this delicious Wedel chocolate bar. Please take a few seconds to like the Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Bar Facebook page and sign the petition hereAll support is greatly appreciated :)

Halloween Recipes for all the family from Ella's Kitchen

It's always fun to get the kids involved in cooking and baking, so I was delighted to receive some great Halloween inspired recipes from Ella's Kitchen to share with you all. They're all made with healthy ingredients and are easy enough for the whole family to get involved with - perfect for half term treats!

Swirly Whirly Cheesecake

Serves 12; Prep = 10 minutes + chilling
This is definitely among Ella’s favourite dessert of all time - it’s a delicious sweet treat
without any added sugar. Enjoy it when you have friends to tea.

What you need:

· 50 g /1 ¾ oz roasted hazelnuts, finely chopped
· 100 g/3 ½ oz Scottish oatcakes, broken up
· 50 g/1 ¾ oz stoned dates
· 50 g/1 ¾ oz unsalted butter, melted
· 400 g/ 14 oz cream cheese
· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
· 300 g/10 ½ oz strawberries, puréed, plus extra to serve (optional)
· 300 ml/ ½ pint double cream

What to do:

· Line the base of a 20 cm/8 inch loose-based cake tin with baking parchment. Put
the hazelnuts and oatcakes in a food processor and blitz them for a few seconds
until everything is finely chopped and looks like breadcrumbs. Add the dates and
blitz again until the mixture is soft. Add the melted butter; mix well and press
the mixture into the tin with the back of a spoon. Chill this in the fridge for 15
minutes.
· Meanwhile, make the topping. In a bowl mix together the cream cheese, vanilla
extract and three-quarters of the puréed strawberries.
· Whisk the cream until it is stiff, but still soft. Fold it gently into the cream
cheese mixture. Remove the base from the fridge and spoon over the topping.
· Drizzle over the remaining strawberry purée in an outward spiral from the
centre and then run a skewer through the spiral to get a marbled effect.
Chill the cheesecake in the fridge for at least 1 hour and then serve with
strawberries on the side (if using).

Marble-ous: Try out your tot’s artistic talents by asking him or her to have a go at making the swirly whirly marbling pattern on the top of the cheesecake.

Ella’s Shortcut: You can sidestep making the strawberry purée by substituting 2 x 90g/3 ¼ oz pouches of Ella’s Kitchen Smoothie Fruits – The Red One.

AWESOME GINGER AND ORANGE CAKE

Makes 8 cakes; prep=20 minutes, cook=30-35 minutes
This cake is a sweet and scrummy introduction to ginger – have fun helping your little
ones discover new tastes for their developing taste buds.

What you need

· 75 g/2½ oz unsalted butter
· 150 g/5½ oz golden syrup or black treacle
· 225 g/8 oz self-raising flour
· 2 teaspoons ground ginger
· 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
· 225 g/8 oz coarse cut orange marmalade
· 1 egg, beaten
· 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice

What to do

· Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/Gas Mark. Grease a 20 cm/8 inch square cake
tin and line the base with baking parchment.
· Melt the butter and syrup in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring well to combine.
Remove the mixture from the heat and set aside.
· Sift the flour, ginger and cinnamon into a bowl, then slowly pour the syrup
mixture into the flour mixture and stir to combine. Add the marmalade, egg,
orange juice and 1 tablespoon of hot water and combine to make a soft mixture.
Add a further 1–2 tablespoons of hot water if it is too stiff.
· Pour the mixture into the cake tin and spread evenly. Bake the cake for 30–35
minutes until golden and firm to the touch.
· Allow the cake to cool for 15 minutes in the tin before carefully removing it to a
wire rack. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or cold with a glass of
freshly squeezed orange juice.

SMILEY SPIRAL APPLE TARTS

Makes 6; Prep=20 minutes, cook=15-20 minutes
Who knew apple tarts could taste this good? Little ones will love to get involved using
pastry cutters and decorating the tarts with apple slices.

What you need:

· 320 g/11¼ oz ready-made puff pastry
· 2 eating apples (Granny Smith or Royal Gala work best)
· 1 tablespoon lemon juice
· 50 g/1¾ oz unsalted butter, cut into 6 cubes
· ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
· 25 g/1 oz soft light brown Sugar

What to do:

· Preheat the oven to 200ºC /400ºF/Gas Mark 6.
· Roll out the puff pastry until it is 0.5 cm/¼ in thick. Using a 10 cm/4 inch pastry
cutter, cut out 6 circles from the pastry and place them spaced well apart on a
baking sheet.
· Core the apples, then cut them into very thin slices and put them in a bowl with
the lemon juice. Toss the apple slices well to coat them in the juice. Arrange the
apple slices on top of the dough circles in a ‘flower’ pattern.
· Place a cube of butter on each tart, then sprinkle the tarts with a little
cinnamon (to taste) and the sugar.
· Bake the tarts in the oven for 15–20 minutes until golden brown. Serve them
warm or cold with vanilla ice cream or crème fraîche.

Can I help?: Roll, cut, fill.
Tots of all ages get to play at being baker with these simple apple tarts. Making them is
a brilliant activity for a play date. One friend rolls the dough, another cuts the circles
and another fills the tart with pieces of apple.

Beyers Chocolates South Africa: Chocolate Couture Selection (Woolworths Food)

I was recently sent a superb selection of chocolates to try from the largest independent chocolate manufacturer in South Africa - Beyers Chocolates. See also my Amarula Chocolates review HERE. This box of 16 Chocolate Couture Selection immediately caught eye not just because it's so visually stunning, but also as it's made by Beyers Chocolate for Woolworths Food. I soon discovered that there is a successful Woolworths chain in South Africa that had no affiliation with the Woolworths chain that existed in the UK. I certainly don't remember my old Woolworths selling such gorgeous chocolates!

The individual chocolates all look sensational. There are eight different varieties in all, each topped with embedded ingredients; Hazelnut Chocolate Delight, Chocolate Lava, Vanilla & Strawberry Caramel, Hazelnut & Lemon Curd, Strawberry Caramel, Burnt Orange Caramel, Raspberry Caramel, and Cherry Pavlova.

Each one is like a mini dessert in it's own right! Having tried all of them I can say that they are also some of the most interesting and tasty chocolates I've had the pleasure of trying. The creamy milk chocolate used in each, has a lovely cocoa flavour which provides a perfect base for all the different flavours within.

Vanilla & Strawberry Caramel: The separate layers within this chocolate all look stunning. There's a strawberry cream layer on the bottom, with a middle layer of caramel, all topped by a dome of strawberry infused white chocolate and decorated with larger freeze dried strawberries. The vanilla and strawberry flavours work beautifully together.

Hazelnut & Lemon Curd: At first I didn't like the idea of this flavour combination but I was proved wrong, because it's completely delicious, and one of my favourites from this selection. The sweet lemon cream layer is topped with white chocolate and a crunchy nut brittle. Just yummy!

Cherry Pavlova: This is visually one of the most striking chocolates in the selection. The bright pink coloured chocolate with white meringue pieces peaking through looks fantastic. I was expecting this to be very sweet and sugary but I was pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous cherry flavour. The ingredients contain dried cherries, cherry paste and cherry pulp, which all combine to create cherry perfection! The meringue on the top is nicely crunchy but still melts away very easily. An outstanding cherry chocolate.

Raspberry Caramel: Again the fruity flavour has been done exceptionally well here. There is lots of fresh tasting raspberry flavour within the caramel layer, and it's all topped off with a lovely white chocolate and decorated with dried raspberries. Loved it!

Hazelnut Chocolate Delight: This is another great looking chocolate, with it's whole hazelnuts embedded in the top. The dark chocolate base, is emphasised by an extra layer of soft dark chocolate too. This is topped with a hazelnut flavoured white chocolate, the flavour of which is somewhat dominated by the dark chocolate. This was one of my husbands favourites.

Strawberry Caramel: Similar to the first chocolate (above) but obviously without any of the vanilla creaminess in between. This is pure strawberry and caramel flavour! The inner caramel is sweet and delicious and is topped by a strawberry white chocolate filled with dried strawberry pieces. Again, the fruity flavour is fabulous and remarkably, the whole thing is well balanced in terms of sweetness.

Burnt Orange Caramel: A classic chocolate orange with candied orange pieces on top. I'm not the biggest fan of chocolate and orange combinations but the buttery caramel centre here adds a unique and interesting touch. (My camera has done strange things to the orange colour - it's not so neon in real life).

Chocolate Lava: I love the name! The little chocolate curls on the top of this domed chocolate do make it look like a little volcano. This is a pure chocoholics delight. Simple and sweet, with milk and white chocolate and a dark chocolate soft centre.

Overall, I absolutely loved this whole Chocolate Couture Selection. The chocolates are gorgeously presented and provide pure sweet indulgence. I know that Beyers make chocolates for several UK companies and I hope they can bring this selection over here soon!

I received this product for an honest review but all views expressed are my own.

New Maynards Sour Patch Kids Soda Popz

Maynards Sour Patch Kids were released in the UK late last year (see my previous review here) and by the looks of things they've been very successful as they've already added this new Soda Popz variety to the range. I've been trying to find them ever since I heard they were being launched so I was very lucky to be offered the chance to try some packs.

There are five different flavours in each packet, all based on popular soda drinks; Cola, Orangeade, Cherryade, Tropical and Apple Fizz. It's a great selection of fizzy flavours!

Just like the regular Sour Patch Kids sweets these are described as "Sour then turning Sweet". This is because they're coated (liberally!) with a sour sugar coating that dissolves quickly, leaving behind the inner sugary sweet flavour. It's a great idea and the overall sweetness means they're especially enjoyable for those that don't usually like sour sweets.

I love the look of the Sour Patch Kids sweets - they're just like Jelly Babies but with a teenager spiky haircut. So it's probably fitting that as the jelly teenagers of the sweetie world they're now available in soda flavours! The Cola is the most sour of the five, as the fizzy flavour seemed to last the longest before the sweetness kicked in. The other flavours were a lot sweeter and not really that sour - the Orangeade, Cherryade and Apple Fizz are quite sour tasting at the start, but that is immediately followed by their sweet fruity flavour. The Tropical flavour was interesting, but quite hard to pin down the exact fruit - it just has that vague tropical taste!

Overall, the five flavours are all extremely moreish and tasty. I also like the fact that these are made with all natural colours.

I received this product from Maynards' PR company in order to provide an honest review and all views are my own.

Grocery Gems Verdict: Sour Patch Kids Soda Popz

Angry Birds Space Comet - Orange Cola Drink (Cybercandy)

This range of Angry Birds Cola is so popular in it's native Finland, that it's even started to win the "cola wars" there, outselling the more popular brands of cola. Is this because the Angry Birds are so popular or is it because the drink just tastes better than rival colas?

I recently reviewed some Angry Birds sweets, which were also manufactured in Finland. I was really impressed by them as they were tasty and not pumped full of artificial ingredients. I picked up this Angry Birds Space Comet which is described online as an orange flavoured cola. I've had vanilla, cherry and a lime flavoured cola, so an orange flavoured cola was something I simply had to try!

The cola is the dominant taste at first, it's a very sweet and light kind of cola - not too fizzy or strong. After that first flavour of cola it becomes more of a fizzy orangeade as the citrus flavour kicks in. It's zingy and fresh without being overpowering. I enjoyed the overall flavour combination, it's very unusual but it works well.

The real winner is the packaging, which is striking and fun. As you can see from the pictures, the Grocery Gems' household contains a few gamers and gaming related toys, so I am always attracted to video game themed grocery products. I also love buying crazy drinks from all around the world at Cybercandy, and this Angry Birds cola kills two (angry) birds with one stone(!) Even better, it has the added bonus of being quite tasty! Not something I can say about all the gamer themed drinks and grocery products I've tried.

There are four drinks available in this range: tropical fruit flavoured ‘Angry Birds Tropic’, the mandarin and pineapple-flavoured ‘Angry Birds Paradise’, the apple and pear flavoured ‘Angry Birds Lagoon’, and this orange and cola flavoured ‘Angry Birds Space Comet’.

Grocery Gems Verdict: Angry Birds Space Comet

RATING: 8.5 out of 10.
Buy them again?: I'd go for the Angry Birds Lagoon drink next.

Innocent The Golden Smoothie: Oranges, Carrots & Mangoes

I recently reviewed the new Innocent Smoothie for kids so I'm glad to see that there is another new flavour available. This limited edition has been especially created to celebrate Innocent's status as the official smoothie of the Olympic Games. It has the Olympic 2012 logo on the bottle and features a golden vest on the front. My kids loved the front of this but then they are quite excited about the Olympics!

The smoothie has a lovely rich orange colour and is called 'oranges, carrots & mangoes'. I love the sound of this combination. One of my favourite juices to make at home is oranges, carrots, apples and ginger, so I had high hopes for this new Innocent smoothie. In reality the base ingredients are similar to other Innocent Smoothies; grapes, banana, and a squeeze of lemon. The oranges, carrots & mangoes make up 19%, 16% and 8% of this smoothie respectively. It gives you 2 of your 5 a day in a 250ml bottle which is great.

The taste is similar to other Innocent Orange and Mango smoothies. There is only a hint of carrot which I found disappointing, I would have preferred a stronger carrot taste. The overall taste is delicious though, it was slurped up in a matter of seconds and both my kids wanted to try it! I hope that this product will also be made available in a larger family sized bottle.

In slightly related news (well they are linked by the Olympics!) have you seen the latest range of Lego Minifigures? There are 9 new Limited Edition Team GB Minifigures available exclusively in the UK. They are super cute as always! Can't wait to get some of these for my boys. I hope we get the Gymnast and the Relay Runner! Look out for them from July 1st.

Aero Bubbly Bar Limited Edition Orange

Apparently the Aero Bubbly Bar Limited Edition Orange is only available for 12 weeks so if you like this then stock up! It has the same taste as the previously available Aero Orange bars. The difference with the Bubbly Bar range is the new design of the chocolate bar. It now features 10 snappable and bubble shaped segments of chocolate, making it easy to share and even easier to eat!

I'm not the biggest fan of chocolate orange as a flavour, I find the combination is often sickly sweet. I was pleased that the Aero Bubbly Bar is different, probably because of the light and airy texture of the chocolate. The orange taste is zesty and fruity but not too overpowering. I love the look of this bar, the colour is bright orange and the bubbles are very pronounced. It was still a bit too sweet for me and a few pieces go a long way to satisfying any sweet craving.
