Cadbury have been on a roll for sometime now with some interesting product launches under the Dairy Milk brand, most recently with the Oat & Crunch and Marvellous Ice Creams. However, I was quite surprised when I first saw the new range of Cadbury Dairy Milk Puddles chocolate bars - the whole design and concept just seemed so unappealing to me. However, I decided I should at least give them a try when I found out that these are the first Cadbury tablet sized chocolate bars that contain a soft centred filling.
I have to be honest, the appearance of this bar does absolutely nothing for me, in fact I find it quite off-putting. The swirly "puddles" look more like bug eyes to me and even Mr. Grocery Gems declared it as looking ridiculous. On a more serious note, this bar is also very small at only 90g, I can't help feeling that this indented "Puddles" design is all about giving us less product for the same price as a 100g bar.
However, all that is nothing compared to the visual grossness of the mint filling of the Dairy Milk Puddles. Why choose such a yellowy shade of green for a mint filling? It should be white or at least a greener colour. Honestly, take a bite and get a bit of this gooey stuff trailing down and it looks disgusting. Anyway, I know this is all purely about the appearance so I'll move on.
The flavour itself is tasty enough, with the smooth Dairy Milk providing a nice background to the mint filling. The mint flavour is very sweet but it does have a refreshing peppermint edge to it. The texture of the filling was softer than I was expecting, but I would describe it as oozy rather than runny.
Overall, we did enjoy the flavour here (apart from Mr. GG who wouldn't try it) but we are obviously not the target market for the Cadbury Dairy Milk Puddles. I've really liked most of the recent Cadbury new releases but this one just isn't for me.

"visual grossness" - :) haha excellent description
ReplyDeleteI tried this at the weekend and would give it a 8/10. I actually thought it was very, very tasty. But I agree about the colour/appearance of the filling.
Taste was superb, everything else nothing special at all - did not get the puddles theme at all
lol thanks anon :)
DeleteI'm glad it's not just me who doesn't get the puddles theme.
I would give the taste about 7 out of 10 but it lost a couple of marks just for the horrible colour of the filling and the smaller size of the bar.
Great review! I've tried this and it does look like someone blew their noise in the middle of each puddle! Ha ha :)
ReplyDeleteAlso the connecting chocolate is really thin. It should be much thicker. It feels like we are being ripped off. 90g? Are you sure? Seems a bit light to me.
I won't buy this again. Nothing special. Preferred Aero mint.
My eldest son said it looked like snot but I was trying not to mention that word in the review lol
DeleteYes it's 90g but it does feel even smaller than that. There wasn't much to go around.
I did like the actual idea behind the soft filling, it's certainly unique in that respect, but you're right there are plenty of other mint chocolate bars out there to choose from.
I don't like mint but i want try hazelnut flavour :)
ReplyDeleteThe filling on that one does look more appealing!

DeleteMilka makes a very similar (same mould even) product called Choqsplash. Their hazelnut one tastes kinda like really thin nutella in a chocolate bar shell.
DeleteIt's a shame that the mint filling isn't appealing; I've tried the Australian mint filled Dairy Milk (which I presume will taste similar to this) which I loved, so I'm hoping that I enjoy the flavour. I agree though the appearance doesn't look that great and the actual base of Dairy Milk looks pretty thin!
ReplyDeleteI think you will enjoy the flavour of this one, overall it's a tasty chocolate and the soft filling is certainly unique. I'm curious now whether it does taste as good as the Australian one - I'll look forward to your review :)
DeleteI just wish they had made the filling a different colour. Perhaps I'm a bit fussy when it comes to the appearance, but I also don't like the "shrinkflation" that is going on with Cadbury. But other than that it tastes pretty good!
I spotted these in Home Bargains so i bought two :-) i really enjoyed it :-)
ReplyDeleteHow much were they in HB?
Deleteone good english pound! i'd buy them again (but probably shouldnt... my hoarding cupboard is so full!)
Deletechips ahoy were cheaper than usual in B&M
That does not look attractive at all... At least mint and hazelnut sound more adventurous than caramel though, which I would have thought they'd do first.
ReplyDeleteGood point Lisa, it's surprising that they didn't start with a caramel flavour! I really hope they don't discontinue the larger caramel bars and replace them with a Puddles version.
DeleteI didn;t like the hazelnut one at all...the syrupy filling just doesn't work with hazelnut. I don't know why they didn't either do a different flavour such as orange or strawberry, or a Nutella-style filling. I agree about them trying to give us more for less, that was my first thought when I checked the weight. Presumably the syrupy fillings are also cheaper to make than other fillings.
ReplyDeleteedit: give us less for more, lol!
DeleteThe hazelnut one sounds horrible - I think I'll give that a miss then. I agree that orange or strawberry would be far more interesting flavours from Cadbury. Mint just seems a bit boring to me and there are already lots of mint choc flavoured bars out there.
DeleteI'm sure you're right about the syrupy filling being cheaper too!
First time I have binned chocolate in years! I know, what a crime! LOL. I couldn't get rid of the thought I was eating bogies!
ReplyDeleteI really don't like this chocolate bar! The best way to describe this bar is lovely Cadbury's chocolate with pockets of mint flavoured snot! It actually made me heave!
ReplyDeleteCadbury's Bubbles were obviously invented by Satan.
ReplyDeleteEspecially to catch out families on a car trip that mistakenly buy a chocolate bar for the kids at a service station.
After setting off and on the motorway they will discover that the kids can't break any of the sections without them crushing and the filling oozing out all over covering fingers, clothes, seats. Someone in a posh car turning around to see the mess might instantly crash...
Giving a Cadbury's Puddles bar to any children anywhere where the owner is house proud could create a similar car crash disaster with children stuck on curtains or furniture.
Add a family pet into the mix and you can imagine children with minty dog hairy fingers are not pleasant.
Don't attempt to eat one unless you've cordoned the area off and have plenty of wet wipes.
Maybe the safest place to try would be in the bath.
At least that's a safer place to discover that Cadbury's Puddles are a messy sticky badly designed bar of disappointment
