Review: New Haribo Scaremix with Spooky Flavours including Toffee Apple & Bubblegum!

Haribo has released a few updates of it's popular Starmix sweets featuring new flavours and themes recently, such as the Haribo Starmix Frenzy Carnival with tropical flavours. The latest is the Haribo Scaremix which features the usual selection of bears, fried eggs, rings and hearts from the classic Starmix but with new 'Spooky Flavours' and fun scary names. For example the fried egg shapes are now 'Monster Eyeballs' and the rings are 'Dracula Rings'!

There are 9 different sweets in total. The first four are; Blackcurrant & Bubblegum Vampire Hearts, Apple & Blackcurrant Dracula Rings, Toffee Apple Monster Eyeballs and Blood Orange Witches Brew. 

Blackcurrant & Bubblegum Vampire Heart: This is a dark purple jelly on top and a bright blue soft foam underside. The bubblegum flavour comes through with a sweet and fruity flavour that is not too overpowering. 

Toffee Apple Monster Eyeballs: I really enjoyed this unusual flavour but my kids were not so keen. They have a caramel type sweetness with a hint of fruity apple.

Apple & Blackcurrant Dracula Rings: The classic combination of apple and blackcurrant flavours is delicious here and was my kids favourite overall. It reminded them of a popular apple and blackcurrant flavoured drink!

Blood Orange Witches Brew: These are essentially just orange flavoured soda bottles - it's like a Fanta bottle instead of a cola bottle.  

The final five are all fruity flavours: Blackcurrant & Blueberry Dracula Rings, Blood Orange & Apple Dracula Rings, Blood Orange Boo Bear, Lime Boo Bear, and Cherry Boo Bear. Unfortunately I didn't have any of the Blood Orange & Apple Rings in my pack so I can't review that flavour.

Blackcurrant & Blueberry Dracula Rings. This one was the most flavourful in the pack. It has a strong, and surprisingly tart, berry flavour. 

Blood Orange, Lime & Cherry Boo Bears: The bears have all been rebranded 'Boo Bears' - as if that makes them more scary. Anyway, the flavours here are all very fruity, especially the Blood Orange which has the strongest flavour of the bunch. The Lime Boo Bear has a distinctive citrus flavour but the sweet Cherry Boo Bear was my favourite overall.

Review: Haribo Starmix Frenzy - Carnival Edition

Last year I reviewed the Haribo Starmix Frenzy Edition which introduced some more exotic flavours into the popular Haribo range. This year the Haribo Starmix Frenzy has been updated to this limited edition Carnival edition. With the yellow and green colouring of the packaging and the new tropical flavouring this is a clearly inspired by a certain sporting event being held in Brazil.

The new flavours listed on the back are Watermelon (pink bears), Grapefruit & Pineapple (green soda bottles), Lime (purple bears), Peach (yellow hearts), Mango (green eggs), Banana (blue bears), Peach & Apricot (pink and yellow rings), Mango & Peach (green and yellow rings), and Mango & Lime (green and purple rings).

I don't think I've ever seen some of these flavours available from Haribo UK - especially the mango and banana flavours!

The colours are great, lots of yellow and green sweets to match the carnival theme. The flavours are all really good but some are stronger than others. I'm not sure I would have guessed all the flavours without having the packaging in front of me. I enjoyed the mango and peach flavoured sweets the best, they have a lovely, sweet and tropical flavour. The blue banana bears are not as strongly flavoured as I was expecting, but they definitely have a subtle banana flavour. The grapefruit & pineapple combination in the blue bears was quite zesty with the pineapple coming through strongly. The lime and watermelon sweets were both nicely fruity and added to the overall fun theme of this Carnival Edition - I'll definitely be stocking up on a few bags whilst they're still available.

Review: Limited Edition Haribo Minions Gone Batty

After looking for these Haribo Minions Gone Batty for the past few weeks, I finally found them today. They're a fun looking Halloween edition of the popular Haribo Minions sweets. 

The back of the packaging lists three 'new spooky flavours'; Slimey Lime & Orange, Creepy Cherry & Apple and finally a Boo Blueberry & Lemon. Unfortunately the sweets are all the same colour so it's quite hard to differentiate all the flavours. Honestly, I think I have a dud packet with only Cherry & Apple flavour as that's all I can really taste in these. It's a nice flavour, with clearly flavoured cherry and apple sides but it's nothing special by itself. I have yet to find any that taste of lime, orange, blueberry or lemon and I don't really want to eat the whole packet by myself just to be able to try all three flavours! Ultimately these are disappointing and I wouldn't recommend them.

New Instore: Mr. Kipling Tiger Slices, Müller Light Yogurts & More!

Mr Kipling Tiger Slices: Another day, another new Mr. Kipling cake. These new chocolate and orange flavoured slices have a gorgeous tiger stripe pattern and look grrreeeat! I'll have  review up soon. £1.50p at Asda.

Müller Light Coffee Shop Inspired Yogurts: The much missed Müller Light Skinny Cappuccino is back in a slightly new format along with another coffee flavoured yogurt - the new Skinny Latte. These yogurts are very popular with Slimming World followers and I'm sure they'll be flying off the shelves. £2.00p at Asda.

Müller Light Inspired by Florida: Thank you to Richard W. who spotted the new Muller Light Florida Key Lime Pie yogurts in Morrisons. It follows previous yogurts in this around the world range, such as the Müller Inspired by Bali and the Müller Light Inspired by Barbados. I like the idea of a Key Lime Pie flavoured yogurt and I'll be giving this one a try soon. £0.68p each at Morrisons.

Chicago Town The Pizza Melt: I've mentioned these before but this is the first time I've spotted it instore. The question is, is it a pizza or is it a burger? £1.25p at Asda.

Weetabix Protein Crunch Chocolate: Protein seems to be the new buzzword in the world of cereals. I know this Weetabix Protein Crunch has been available for awhile but for some reason my locals supermarkets haven't stocked it. Available in two flavours - chocolate and an original version. £2.98p at Asda.

Kellogg's Disney Variety Pack: I love these new mini boxes of the Kellogg's Frozen and Kellogg's Star Wars cereal - they're just too cute! There are also new Kellogg's Disney Multi-Grain Biscuits in this Frozen and Star Wars range which I'll be reviewing soon. £2.49p at Asda.

Chupa Chups Monstrous: Apologies for the terrible photo. These Halloween themed 'eye-ball' lollipops looked more interesting than usual as they are all 'colour changing'. The front of the packaging says 'lick to change the eye colour'. £1.00p at Asda.

Haribo Minions Gone Batty: I've previously reviewed the original Haribo Minions and Haribo Tangy Minions and I've been trying to find the bagged versions of the latest Halloween edition - Haribo Minions Gone Batty. Review: Haribo Starmix Frenzy Edition - New Flavours!

I've often said in my previous Haribo reviews that it's a shame that we don't get some of the more interesting Haribo flavours that are released in Germany. Well, that's certainly not the case with the new Haribo Starmix Frenzy Edition which features a variety of different flavours.

The new flavours listed on the back are Apricot (yellow bears), Pineapple (orange bears), Mandarin (green bears), Grapefruit (blue hearts), Passion Fruit (pink eggs!), Watermelon (purple soda bottles), Passion Fruit & Grapefruit (pink and blue rings), Passion Fruit & Lime (pink and purple rings), and Grapefruit & Pomegranate (yellow and blue rings).

I know Haribo have released Watermelon flavoured sweets before in the UK - but I don't think I have seen Pomegranate, Apricot and Mandarin flavours from Haribo before!

The packaging for the Haribo Starmix Frenzy Edition and sweets themselves are extremely colourful and eye catching. I love the bright and summery theme here.

I started with the green bear (mandarin) and although the flavour is initially a bit subtle, it does have a burst of a sweet and distinctive citrus flavour at the end. The yellow bear (apricot) has a light flavour that is a cross between peach and apricot. The orange bear (pineapple) has a good fruity flavour with a tangy edge.

The blue rings (Passion Fruit & Grapefruit) are dominated by a sweet and zesty grapefruit flavour. I was most curious about the yellow rings (Grapefruit & Pomegranate) but I found these the blandest of the bunch, and I couldn't really detect any pomegranate flavour. The pink rings (Passion Fruit & Lime) have a lovely tropical flavour with the passion fruit coming through strongly here.

Lastly, the three odd shapes in the pack. The blue foam-backed heart (Grapefruit) has the same zesty citrus taste as the blue rings but the sweet foam back mellows out the flavour. The pink eggs (Passion Fruit) are my favourites from this Frenzy Edition - they're just so cute! The flavour is similar to the pink ring with a tropical sweetness in the centre pink "yolk". I also really enjoyed the purple and pink soda bottles and their super sweet watermelon flavour.

As I mentioned in a previous New Instore post there is also a Haribo Tangfastics Frenzy Edition available, also with new flavours.

Review: Haribo Tangy Minions

A quick review of the Haribo Tangy Minions sweets. Last year I reviewed the Haribo Minions, which jelly sweets, so I was keen to also try this recent sour version too.

There are two main sweets in the pack; the classic blue and yellow Minions and a red and orange version that I assume is the evil Minions. Some of the blue and yellow candies were also foam backed, although there were hardly any of those in my pack (two in total). 

Both flavours in these Tangy Minions are quite generically fruity, it's hard to pin down the exact flavours at play. At a push I would say the blue and yellow sweets have a sweet and tangy apple and blackcurrant type of flavour, whilst the red and orange ones have more of a citrus/tropical edge to them. However, it's the tangy coating and sour combination which really makes these sweets extra tasty and superior to the original Haribo Minions (which were quite bland in comparison).

New Instore: Krispy Kreme Lotus Biscoff Caramelised Biscuit Doughnut & More!

Krispy Kreme Biscoff Caramelised Biscuit Doughnut: Apparently this masterpiece has been available since last week (why didn't I know?). I couldn't help noticing the Krispy Kreme cabinet in my local Tesco today, with their new bright red Valentine's doughnuts, and sitting oh-so-innocently beside them - the Krispy Kreme Lotus Biscoff Caramelised Biscuit Doughnut. It's a doughnut filled with a Kreme infused with Lotus Caramelised biscuit spread, iced with more Biscoff spread, and topped with Biscoff biscuit crumbs and white chocolate. Review coming soon! 3 for £3.45p at Tesco.

Haribo Bear Buddies: If you remember the super cute Haribo Bärchen Päachen from this German Grocery Exchange, then you'll be pleased to know that they have released the same product in the UK as Bear Buddies. These clever sweets feature two bears holding hands, with one bear being a sweet flavour and the other a sour flavour. Thank you to the reader who spotted them in Sainsbury's awhile ago (I finally found them!). £1.00p at Sainsbury's. 

Haribo Happy Cola Cherry Liquid Centre: I also reviewed the original German release of these Haribo Cherry Cola - check out the liquid filling here! Another thank you to the commentator who let me know a few weeks ago that these had been spotted in the UK. I would never have noticed these myself, as they were hidden away on the bottom shelf, but I'm really pleased to see these available here! £1.00p at Sainsbury's. 

Müller Corner American Cheesecake Inspired Multipack: An American inspired rebranding for the Lemon Cheesecake and Strawberry Cheesecake corner yogurts. I'm sure these flavours aren't new but I think they were called "Dessert Inspired" (I can't remember though!). Half price offer £1.92p at Tesco for multipack of 6.

Tesco Limited Edition Caramel Milkshake Mix: I really like the fact that Tesco go beyond the standard banana, strawberry and chocolate flavours for their milkshakes mixes. My kids enjoyed the Vanilla milkshake mix last year and I'm sure I'll pick up this new Caramel variety for them to try soon. £1.49p at Tesco.

Asda Heart Cake: It always seems that the UK supermarkets go straight from Christmas products to Easter eggs. However, there is always a few weeks inbetween when the seasonal aisles are taken over by Valentine's Day. There are plenty of novelty products in the bakery department at the moment, I spotted heart shaped waffles and crumpets in Tesco, and these cute "Love is a Piece of Raspberry & White Chocolate Cake" cakes in Asda. I STILL haven't managed to find the new Red Velvet Doughnuts in Tesco though!

Tassimo Limited Edition Costa Vanilla Latte: I know these are available online from Tassimo but I didn't realise they were also available instore. They're quite expensive so I'll probably stick to using vanilla coffee syrup if I fancy a vanilla latte. £5.29p at Asda.

Pop Tarts in Poundland!: Not a new product of course, but I thought it was interesting that Pop Tarts Apple Blast and Very Cherry have been spotted at Poundland, especially since they usually cost upwards of £2.68p in the supermarkets. I wonder if it means these flavours are discontinued? £1.00p at Poundland.

Kellogg's Coco Pops Mini Crocs: My kids tried these and gave them the thumbs up. The actual cereal tastes the same as the previous Coco Pops varients such as Croco Copters and Croc Prints. The Mini Crocs is simply the latest shape in this range but the flavour seems to be exactly the same. £2.79p at Sainsbury's.

Tesco Chinese New Year Display: My local Tesco (which is only a medium sized store) had a cute display of products for Chinese new year, from Lucky Cats (really these are Japanese Maneki-Neko) to Red Money Envelopes and Dragon Mask craft sets. For some reason I was tempted to buy the pretty blue and white cat napkins! From £1.50p at Tesco.

Grocery Gems: Top 10 Reviews of 2014

Following on from my Best of 2014 list yesterday, here's a look at the readers favourites - the Top Ten most read reviews of the year on Grocery Gems. It's always a surprise to see which reviews are the most popular and I have to admit that I was completely surprised about some of the posts which made the top ten, including the number one most viewed post on Grocery Gems in 2014! For this list, I left out any post that made the top ten that wasn't actually published in 2014 (there are a couple of reviews from 2013 that are still very popular). You can click on the product name for links to the original review.

10: Coke Life

Just making the top ten is my review of the first new core brand to be released by Coca-Cola since 2006 - Coke Life. This also made my personal favourites of the year list. It's no surprise to me that this is in the top ten, in fact I'm just surprised this review from back in August it wasn't higher up on the list.

9: Müller Corner Bliss Whipped Greek Style Yogurt

This is one of those reviews that I had completely forgotten about so I was completely surprised to see it anywhere near the top ten. The photos are ones that I had taken on my kitchen worktop which usually means that I'm not planning to even review the product (I pretty much take photos of everything now just in case!). Anyway, I'm certainly glad I posted this review in the end, as readers were obvioulsy curious to know more about this new Whipped yogurt from the Müller Corner range. 

8: Lidl Deluxe Coconut Spread

Coming in at number 8 is the Lidl Deluxe Coconut Spread review. This was definitely one of my favourite finds of 2014. Even though it had been around before in previous years, this is the first time I had managed to find and review it. Lidl brings out the Deluxe range of spreads for sale at sporadic intervals during the year and it remains a frustratingly difficult product to find.

7: M&S Toffee Fudge & Belgian Choc Hot Cross Buns

At number 7, the M&S Toffee Fudge & Belgian Chocolate Hot Cross Buns. I was quite shocked to see this review amongst the most popular of the year, I didn't really remember these hot cross buns at all. Looking back, however, they were one of the more interesting products released last Easter, along with the equally tasty Double Chocolate Hot Cross Buns from Tesco. I hope we'll see some interesting hot cross bun flavours for 2015 too.

6: Haribo Minions

I'm pleased to see these Haribo Minions in the Top Ten even though the sweets themselves were quite disappointing in terms of flavour. Despicable Me 2 is one of our favourite family films and I think the cheeky Minions characters are here to stay as popular characters for products aimed at children. In fact, I spotted Minions products for Easter already - check out my instagram photo of these Minions Eggs. 

5: Asda Piñata Cake

Asda came up trumps with this great value piñata cake - a celebration cake filled with sweets. Piñata cakes were already popular on blogs and Pinterest but it's handy to have a supermarket version for anyone who is not a keen baker. Asda often releases celebration cakes with wow factor - such as the Asda Rainbow Cake back in 2013. 

4: Tesco Custard Cream Spread

Reaching the number 4 spot, this review of the Tesco Custard Cream Spread, was the post I was expecting to hit the number one spot easily. I hands down thought this was my most popular review, especially after it was mentioned on various news sites and my photos used on Buzzfeed. However, not only wasn't it number one, there was actually another sweet spread review that beat it on viewing figures.

3: Maltesers Teasers Chocolate Spread

Surprisingly, there are a total of three chocolate spreads in this top ten! I posted this Maltesers Teasers Review just a few days before the Tesco Custard Cream review but I didn't expect it to have been more popular. I guess that's what happens when you turn a favourite chocolate brand into a spread. Here's hoping that 2015 sees the release of a proper Bounty Chocolate Spread! 

2: Walkers Ranch Raccoon Crisps

Of all the crisp reviews I posted in 2014, I didn't expect the one with the worst rating to become the most popular and certainly not to be the second most viewed post. This was a variety that divided crisps fans with it's love-it-or-hate-it gamey meat and sour cream flavour. I wasn't even going to review this variety, having already reviewed all the other varieties in Walkers Do Us A Flavour promotion. However, even though I hated the flavour, I decided to review them just to complete the series. Funnily enough this review was also posted in the same week as the above Tesco Custard Cream Spread and the Maltesers Teasers Chocolate Spread. Looking back that was an important week for Grocery Gems!  

1: Kinder Surprise Disney Princess & Marvel Heroes

And finally, easily being my most popular post of 2014 is this review of the Kinder Surprise Disney Princess and Marvel Heroes range. It's funny to look back and see a Disney Princess product that doesn't include any of the characters from the movie Frozen! This review from back in February 2014 was my most popular post by far in 2014. It even attracted a staggering amount of comments, with a mini swap-shop taking place via the comments section. I thought that was just wonderful!

German Grocery Exchange Part 4 - Christmas Edition!

Followers of my blog may know that I've taken part in some wonderful grocery exchanges with the lovely Steffi from Germany. You can take a look at our previous exchanges posts; the original German Grocery Exchange HERE, Part 2 HERE, and Part 3 (the World Cup Edition!) HERE. I'm delighted that Steffi and I were able to arrange another snack swap (last month), and because it was so close to December we decided to make it Christmas themed. Germany is of course famous for it's Christmas markets and traditional yuletide snacks, so I knew that this was going to be an extra special exchange. Here's a quick run down of the delicious Christmas selection that Steffi sent me:

Haribo Color-Rado Winter Edition: This is a new limited edition of the classic Color-Rado Mix from Haribo. Steffi tells me that there are lots of new flavours in this pack and helpfully provided an explanation of all the flavous listed on the back. I'll have a full review soon. There are some really interesting flavours in here - far more unusual than we get in the UK:

Heiße Zitrone  - which is a hot lemon type drink (sounds like Lemsip!)

Winter Kirshe - literally translates as winter cherry 

Bratapfel - baked apple (yum!)

Vanillekipferl - a classic German Christmas biscuit 

Karamell-Lakritz - Caramel Liquorice

Schneeflöckchen - "Little Snowflakes" (they have a sweet fruity flavour)

Bunte Elche - "Colourful Mooses" - there are different flavours including gingerbread.

Nimm2 Lachgummi: A large bag of fruity gummies. These sweets come in lots of shapes that kids can use to build faces with, and this special limited edition includes Christmas shapes too. If you look closely at the left hand lower corner of the packaging you can see a reindeer made of the fruity pieces. My boys are absolutely loving these sweets - they are so sweet and fruity and the shapes are super fun too!

Yogurette Wintertraum - Bratapfel & Zimt: Yogurette are similar to Ferrero Duplo sticks (and are also made by Ferrero), but are seen as a healthier version as they are made with yogurt flavoured fillings. In our last grocery exchange, Steffi had included the World Cup, Brazil inspired, limited edition Yogurette, which were a tasty white chocolate and lime combination (see HERE). This time there is a lovely "winter dream" edition which is Baked Apple & Cinnamon flavour - doesn't that sound gorgeous? I really wish we could get chocolates with such wonderful flavour combinations here in the UK. These are Steffi's favourites and I can see why, the sweet apple and cinnamon flavours make a delicious pairing with the tangy yogurt filling.

Haribo Weihnachtssterne (Christmas Stars): Another festive treat in the shape of these Haribo Christmas Stars. These are large foam, star shaped sweets in three flavours; cream, vanilla and caramel. The packaging looks wonderful, like a little gift, and would make a lovely stocking filler.

Heilemann Confisene Pralinés: Heilemann is a brand I've never tried before but Steffi tells me their chocolates are delicious. This Christmas selection looks beautiful in it's festive box with a little felt Christmas tree on the front. Inside there are four different chocolates; Gianduja-Nougat, Caramel Crisp, Christmas Nougat, and a marzipan. Each chocolate has a very fine appearance - I'll try to have a review of these soon.

Gewürz Mandeln (Spiced Almonds): These are spiced almonds that are coated in milk chocolate with a Gianduja nougat. The spices in these are described as being not too strong so that even children can enjoy them. These are so delicious! They have a very sweet, almost sugary, cinnamon flavour that is fantastic with the milk chocolate and the crunchy almond inside. I actually found the cinnamon quite strong but these are so sweet that it doesn't become too spicy or overpowering. It's such a simple idea but it works perfectly. And yes, my kids love them too!

Marzipan Kartoffeln: This literally means "marzipan potatoes" and these are a traditional German sweet at Christmas. Not to worry though, they are not actually potato flavoured, just super cute potato shaped marzipan treats. They remind me of potato shaped chocolates that I used to get as a child - anyone else remember those?

Printen - Aachener Schokoladen: Some more traditional treats in the form of these Printen from the German city of Aachen. Steffi gave me lots of interesting information about these which is very useful to share here. Aachen is a city close to both the Dutch and Belgian borders. These Printen are similar to gingerbread, in terms of flavour, but are a bit firmer than Lebkuchen (German gingerbread). There are chocolate coated or plain versions available, and they are described as "spiced cakes" on the packaging but Steffi says that doesn't do them justice. This is one of the treats that I'm saving for Christmas!

Gesüllte Lebkuchenherzen (Filled Gingerbread Hearts): Another traditional treat that I'm saving for Christmas itself are these filled gingerbread hearts. They are coated in dark chocolate and have an apricot jam filling. These are made by a company called Lambertz who are well known for their biscuits. I think they sound really delicious and I'm looking forward to giving these Lebkuchenherzen a try.

Butter Spekulatius: "Spekulatius" is the German version of the speculoos biscuits. There are two kinds available in Germany; Butter or Gewürz (spiced). I have to admit these delicious buttery biscuits were the first to disappear when I opened the parcel from Steffi - everyone wanted to give them a try!

Ritter Sport Winter Editions 2014: Ritter Sport is one of my favourite German chocolate brands and Steffi very kindly included lots of mini sizes of the three new Winter Edition flavours. There is Kaffee & Nuss (Coffee & Hazelnuts - reviewed HERE), Gebrante Mandel (Caramelised Almonds - reviewed HERE), and Vanille Kipferl (Vanilla Crescent Cookie). These mini sizes are adorable!

Ritter Sport Schokowürfel: Steffi tells me this is not a Christmas related product but she had to include it in her parcel because it's new - thank you Steffi! Each selection box is filled with individually wrapped segments of Ritter Sport chocolate. There are three flavours that are all covered in white chocolate; Latte Macchiato, Nut-Almond-Brittle, and Caramel Nut. I love that fact that all the chocolates here are white chocolates - it's such a super sweet collection! Full review coming soon.

I will update here with a photo of the parcel that I sent Steffi in return (once I know she's received it as I don't want to spoil the surprise!). Once it's up I will put "updated" in the title of this post.

In the meantime, I want to send a huge THANK YOU to Steffi for such a special festive Grocery Exchange. I've always wanted to visit Germany at Christmastime (especially for their world famous Christmas markets) and I'm delighted to have so many lovely German Christmas treats to try this year.
