Review: Tesco Double Chocolate Hot Cross Buns

Tesco has quite a few interesting varieties of hot cross buns this year, beyond the traditional spiced fruit. I was immediately drawn to these Double Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, described as chocolate flavoured hot cross buns with chocolate chunks - perfect for the raisin hating members of my family!

They look just like hot cross buns from the outside but inside it's purely a chocolate treat. The dough has a much richer chocolate taste than I was expecting and almost approaches a chocolate muffin in flavour. I was also surprised to discover that these buns contain dark chocolate chunks, and there is no milk listed in any of the ingredients. The large chocolate chunks melted slightly when the buns were toasted, creating tasty pockets of gooey chocolate. All round, these were greatly enjoyed by the whole family and make a great alternative to traditional hot cross buns.

  1. Happy New Year!
This looks yummy. But isn't it a bit early for Easter? I am still recovering from Christmas.

    1. They're worth a try! Although I bought some reduced ones and they weren't as nice as the fresher ones. They were quite stale!

  3. The flavouring description surprises me too! Wow, sounds interesting... I must try! It just seems a little bit too early (maybe closer to Easter I'll pick up some)

    1. Oh I agree. I'm not buying any Easter chocolates until nearer the time. Just can't face it. I make an exception for the occasional hot cross bun in the run up to Easter :)

  4. Bought these last night with the Apple and Cinnamon ones and both are delicious. As for the Double Chocolate ones, they could be toasted in some Tostabags

  6. I haven't tried toasting the chocolate ones in the Toastabags yet but it's a suggestion I came up with since the packaging says "Not suitable for toasting." One word of warning with the Apple and Cinnamon ones. They contain raisins but I'm sure you'll like them ;-).
