Marks & Spencer Fish & Chips Handcooked Potato Crisps Review

The new "Great British Summer" food range has hit Marks & Spencer food halls. A lot of the range seems to be merely a repackaging of staple products, but one part of the range that stood out for me were the two new flavours of Handcooked Potato Crisps. Normally I would go straight for the new Beef Burger crisps, but my husband convinced me to try the Fish & Chips flavour. It's interesting to note that both flavours are vegetarian friendly!

As cute as this seaside bench scene is, it needs a greyer sky and a few ominous looking rain clouds to truly deserve the name Great British Summer!

The idea of Fish & Chips flavoured crisps seemed very unusual to me, and frankly a bit of a novelty flavour, but I reminded myself that there is already a very tasty and popular fish themed potato snack which has been available for many years now, Scampi Fries by Smiths. If scampi & lemon can work as a snack flavour then why not fish & chips?

The Marks & Spencer Fish & Chips Potato Crisps have a lovely uniform golden colouring. At first scent these crisps could easily be mistaken for a salt and vinegar offering and I was quite pleased that they don't smell "fishy" at all! The inital taste certainly confirms that vinegar is the main flavour here. However, there is also underlying fish taste which really does evoke a Fish & Chips when combined with the potato crisps and vinegar.

Unfortunately, I didn't find these crisps as moreish or tasty as the aforementioned Scampi Fries. The fish flavour in these Fish & Chips crisps was a little too domineering for my tastebuds. Other reviewers have said that there is hardly any fish flavour at all so perhaps it's just me! Overall, I'd say they are worth a try, especially if you like vinegar, as that is undoubtedly the dominant flavour.

If you've tried these then I'd love to know what you think of this flavour, please leave a comment below to share your thoughts! :)

  1. Not sure about these as the "fishy" bit doesn't appeal. I NEED those beef burger crisps though, the burger Pringles were epic but I can't find them anymore

  3. Awk how cute is that wee bench and little couple? Sitting there munching their wee chips in cones, gotta be the only way to eat chips! These crisps sound soo cool, I agree with Hannah and you Miss Katherine, ''fishy'' part sounds abit iffy....would be awesome to try though. Must look out for these in Marks and sparks! :D Awesome they're suitable for vegetarians too, yaay! :D

  4. The truth about these crisps is that they are very dissapointing. They only have a VERY STRONG vinegar taste. The only time I slightly tasted any resemblence to fish. Was right at the very bottom of the packet where the the crumbs are. And it was just a very slight taste and actually tasted like the sliver skin part of the fried cod fillet.

    1. It's true that the dominant flavour is the vinegar. However my pack also had a fishy aftertaste which was present throughout the whole pack. It is very much like the silver skin as you describe. Not pleasant.

  5. Thank you for such a honest and frank review.
I am quite pleased, that the general tone was positive.
All criticisms will be taken into consideration, for next time.
