Magnum Vanilla & Chocolate Ice Cream

New from Walls Magnum, ice cream in tubs! Magnum are of course famous for their ice creams on a stick. I tried to think of a more sophisticated way to describe them but there you have it - ice cream on a stick. Now Magnum have branched into the premium ice cream tub market to rival the likes of Haagen Dasz and Ben & Jerry's.

There are two varieties available in this new range; Vanilla & Chocolate or just Chocolate. They both seem fairly safe choices, if a little boring.

The top of the ice cream is covered in dark chocolate pieces. The ice cream itself has a deep creamy colour. There is also a "core" of chocolate sauce, which I uncovered in the photo below. This is very similar to the recent Ben & Jerry Cores Ice Cream.

Everything about this new Magnum Vanilla & Chocolate Ice Cream is good. The ice cream is very creamy and speckled throughout with small chocolate shavings. The chocolate sauce core is flavourful and has a rich cocoa edge. The chocolate pieces on top add a tasty initial crunch. It's all very good, I can't say anything bad about the taste, but there was still something missing for me. I think I am too used to exciting flavours in these kinds of premium ice cream tubs. There are so many fantastic choices out there. I also absolutely loved the Ben & Jerry Cores Ice Cream, they are delicicous with a great combination of flavours and textures. The Magnum Vanilla & Chocolate Ice Cream is just a bit boring in comparision. However if you looking for a simple vanilla and chocolate ice cream done well then this will go down a treat.

The  Magnum Vanilla & Chocolate Ice Cream costs £3.99 for a 450ml tub but is currently on offer for £1.99 in Sainsbury's.

Are you tempted by the new Magnum Ice Creams?

  1. There is a third flavour in this range I think- the Creme Brulee.

The reason that I think that is because I ate some about 20 minutes before I read your review funnily enough!

  2. Wait...maybe I'm going crazy.

I've definitely just eaten some Creme Brulee ice cream from a tub that looked very similar to this Magnum range.

    I'm confused now.

  3. Confusion over, I've just been to my freezer. (Sorry, i've now just spammed this review with my ramibling- feel free to delete if you want!)

I tried a Creme Brulee ice cream from Carte D'or which is a spookily similar tub to the Magnum range you've taken a look at.

    My bad!

  4. Lol no probs! I know the ice cream you mean, it was stacked next to this Magnum one in Sainsbury's and they do look VERY similar.

The flavours for the Carte D'or tubs look a lot more interesting. Was the Creme Brulee one any good?

  5. I keep seeing this in Sainsbury's...or maybe it's the Creme Brûlée Carte D'or which I saw lol ;)

Anyway I've been tempted to buy it but like you, I used to more exciting sounding flavours so I end up buying those instead. I do love Magnum on a stick though so I am sure it is really nice.

    1. Thanks Hannah!
It's funny we both did ice cream reviews on the same day. Looks like we are all enjoying our ice cream at the moment!

  6. The Creme Brulee wasn't great- I gave it a chance because it was on offer, and it was far too sweet for me. It actually does deliver quite a Creme Brulee taste in that it has crunchy sugar pieces and a nice vanilla flavour...but as a whole, it's unbelievably sugary.

I wish I'd played it a bit safer and got the Magum Vanill and Chocolate you've reviewed.

  7. Very much tempted! The ones on a stick are among my favourites.

  8. Yes I saw this in the Supermarket but I wasn't sure what it would taste like as I sometimes find the chocolate on the stick types too sickly. I am going to give it a try now though!

Shame the flavours are not very exciting, hopefully they will bring out some new flavours soon! Great review :)

  9. Yeah, I saw this in the Supermarket as well. I love Magnum on the sticks. But I like the idea of Magnum extending their range. Now if only Magnum made chocolate bars!

  10. Dave- Thanks for the mini review. I think I'll avoid the creme brulee then, sounds too sugary. They've also got two other flavours, Tart Aux Pommes and Chocolate Fondant, I might give one of those a try soon.

Ana - I love Magnums on a stick too. I had seen the tubs for a while but I only gave into temptation because of the half price offer!

OhSoBella - Thank you! That's interesting, I usually buy Magnums as the mini version, but I do like the chocolate on them! Let's hope they get to work on some interesting flavours.

Anon- Magnum chocolate bars!! I like the way you think :)

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

  11. Ingredients: Reconstituted Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Cream (13%), Glucose Fructose Syrup, Water, Cocoa Mass, Glucose Syrup, Cocoa Butter, Whey Solids, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Whole Milk Powder, Butter Oil, Vegetable Fat, Emulsifiers (E471, Soya Lecithin, E442, E476), Stabilisers (E410, E412, E407, E401), Flavourings, Wheat Fibre, Colour (E160a), Maltodextrin.

Holy Moly! If you compare this to Ben and Jerrys or Haagen Dazs, the number one in their ice creams is fresh milk or cream and not "reconstituted skimmed milk" which is found in all cheap ice creams. I be Haagen Dazs or any other luxury ice cream eg Tesco Finest will taste much nicer than this Magnum ice cream.

  12. Just eaten some of this - very poor quality. Even at £1.99 the quality is much poorer than cheap but good cornish ice cream tub. To think of charging the same price as Hagen Dasz or Ben and Jerries, or even supermarket own luxury ice cream is just plain cheeky!!
