Cookie Dough Bites - Cupcake Bites Review

Cookie Dough Bites are an American product that claims to be a cookie dough inspired candy. It's a clever idea to try to recreate the deliciousness that is raw cookie dough in the format of a sweetie. This Cupcake Bites version has been out for a few years now in the US and was very kindly sent to me by the snack maestro @Banjo_Chocolate.

The actual Cupcake Bites are not really as pretty as the box suggests by the With Sprinkles tagline. The balls are quite chalky looking and irregularly shaped, whilst the so called sprinkles reminded me of the play-doh creations my children came up with when they were toddlers. "Look Mummy my play-doh man has green and yellow eyeballs!"

Each Cupcake Bite has a outer layer of what is optimistically called white frosting on the back of the box (and rather bizarrely called White Kreemy Coating in the ingredients), and an inner layer of cupcake flavoured cookie dough. Both the inner and outer layers taste almost identical and can be summed up in one word - SUGARY. In fact, they even have a slightly gritty texture just to emphasize the sugar. There's not much other flavour to these, except for a slight cake mix type taste and a vague hint of vanilla. Having said all that, I have to admit I found these strangely moreish. Even though I should be scoring them only 1 out of 10, I found myself guiltily enjoying these little cupcake morsels!

Thank you again to @Banjo_Chocolate, for sending me these Cupcake Bites. Do you remember the Banjo chocolate bar? Please check out the Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Bar Facebook page and sign the petition here to get Mars to bring the Banjo back in production!

    1. I've never seen a Hello Kitty version of these! I would probably still buy those if I saw them *ashamed face*

  2. I really really hated these cupcake bites! They were the second product I tried from Cookie Dough Bites, (the first being their Cookie Dough Bites) and I don't think I'm giving them a third chance anytime soon. The colours on mine looked a little bit funkier than yours. How artificial-tasting they were!

If you're ever in Covent Garden, Hardy's Original Sweet Shop sells many of their products, you can get their Red Velvet and Peanut butter ones too.

    1. Yes, I can completely understand how most people would hate these. It's interesting to note that in the US they only cost one dollar for a box, so they're really comparable to poundshop type products (even though we pay a lot more for them over here!).

Your cupcake bites (in the link) look much more speckled than mine were!

  4. I picked up a box of these today at my local Mr. Simms, along with some Cinnamon Bun Bites, looking forward to those. I forgot to see if they had the Red Velvet though.

    1. The Cinnamon Bun Bites sound good - they're definitely the ones I'd like to try next.

    2. I've had the misfortune of trying the Cinnamon Bun Bites - they're much like your review for Cupcake Bites; Gritty, overly sugary, bizarre creamy-type coating, some more sugar and a bit of cinnamon. I had a few and actually threw the pack away - which is very rare for me to do, particularly when they cost so much in the first place!

If, however, you kinda liked the Cupcake Bites, you'll probably also kinda guiltily like the Cinnamon Bun ones. ;)

    3. Ah if they don't have much cinnamon flavour, then that would be very disappointing. I wouldn't really want to eat the same flavour as these Cupcake Bites again... once is enough :)

    5. It's interesting reading back this old review. I think nowadays I would have stuck with my original feeling and given this a 1 out of 10. I remember most of the box went unfinished in the end...

The cinnamon bun ones sound horrendous. I've seen them before but not really been tempted to try this range again!
