Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat Review

There have been several versions of green tea flavoured Kit Kat released in Japan, and it's proved to be an extremely popular flavour. These are the newest Limited Edition release for 2013. They're made from white chocolate that is flavoured with a premium Uji matcha green tea powder. I have always wanted to try a Green Tea Kit Kat so I'm extremely grateful to online Japanese store Oyatsu Cafe who very kindly sent me these to review.

Inside the dark green bag there are 12 mini Kit Kat bars. Each bar is individually wrapped and features the distinctive dark green and gold packaging.

I love the fact that there is a blank space on the back of each Kit Kat to write your name  - hands off it's mine! It must be brilliant to turn up to school with a Green Tea Kit Kat in your lunchbag!

The colour of these is fantastic - a mossy green that is speckled with darker green areas. The initial scent and flavour comes predominantly from the sweet white chocolate. It's creamy with a strong vanilla flavour which is just delicious. This sweetness blends away to reveal the earthy flavour of the matcha green tea. Sometimes green tea products can have a bitter flavour to them, but that is not the case here. The matcha powder gives the chocolate a slightly grainy consistency, and a rich green tea flavour. It's all very moreish and I found myself unable to resist opening up more than one packet! I really enjoyed these, and both my children loved them too.

These are available from Oyatsu Cafe for $6.49, which is approximately £4.33! It's a great price - the only shop I've seen selling these in the UK is charging £14.99 for the same package! It really is worth getting the delivery straight from Japan. I have just ordered these new Passionfruit Kit Kat along with three other items and the total cost including delivery came to under £15.

Oyatsu Cafe have offered my readers 15% discount on all orders, simply use the following discount code at the checkout: GROCERYGEMS. This is available for all orders internationally and with no limits. See HERE for more details.

This product was very kindly sent to me by Oyatsu Cafe for review but all views are my own. I don't receive any compensation if you order from Oyatsu Cafe or use the above code.

  1. Wow, this is a blast from the past. I remember buying a green tea Kitkat from cybercandy in 2005, but I really didn't like it and likened the flavour to vomit, haha!

This one sounds much better though. From what I've heard there are different versions of green tea Kitkat using different types of green tea, some nicer than others.

Looking forward to your review of the Passionfruit Kitkat! I tried one myself years ago, but it was dark chocolate coated and had passionfruit cream in the wafers. It was amazing, one of the best Kitkats I've ever tasted.

  2. Passionfruit Kit Kat sounds really nice. I am looking forward to your review on that too. I know what you mean about the powdery consistency, the little Green Tea Kit Kat bites are the same, I still enjoyed them though.

  3. Is that UK retailer who is selling green tea Kit Kats for a ludicrous price Japan Centre by any chance?

  4. Oh wow, they would be great for Halloween!

  5. My Japanese friend brought me some of these a few months ago, and I didn't notice the space on the back to write your name on! That is genius!

Like you, I mostly tasted the white chocolate, but in retrospect, I did get a mild green tea aftertaste. I liked this chocolate! Very interesting.

  6. Today I found Green Tea Kit Kat Nestle at my local supermarket Japan section. Seems delicious not too bitter suitable for young children and adult with sweet tooth.
